Judge’s Critique – Connie Alexander, Kernersville, NC

I was very excited about judging your specialty and seeing some of the Seattle area.  I was not disappointed on both accounts. It was sunny the day I arrived and I was able to see all of Seattle from the plane.  Mt. Rainier was visible from my hotel room.  I was surprised that the picturesque valley that the show site was located was so close to Seattle.  And, last but not least, the weather was wonderful.  I could not have ordered a better day to have a dog show.

I think that the entry was spectacular.  I feel very privileged to have been invited to judge these dogs.  The breeders and owners should be very proud of themselves.  I thoroughly enjoyed the day of judging and the cook out that evening.  It is nice to meet new people and people that you have seen for years across the room at the Nationals.  Thank you again for inviting me to judge your specialty.

6-9 Puppy Dogs-#5 OXFORDS PRINCETONS TAKE IT TO THE LIMIT
This is a fawn brindle and white puppy who is very filled out for such a young dog.   He has a lovely head, is well balanced and goes around well.

9-12 Puppy Dogs-#13 LAKOTA’S WARLOCK OF AMBERWIND
This puppy is mostly fawn. He has more length of body, good front fill and a nice head.  He also moves nicely.

12-18 Dogs-#17 BELAYA CHANSON D’AMOUR
This young dog is balanced with a smooth topline and good angulation.  I think that he has a lanky look that will be resolved as he matures.

This is a fawn and white dog with a lovely head and eye.  He is balanced front and rear and moves nicely.

This is a fawn brindled and white dog has a smooth topline and a good underline.  He has good depth of chest and front fill.

Open Dogs-#43 SPORTING FIELDS MAN IN BLACK
This black and white dog has a beautiful outline, balanced front and rear with good angulation.  He also is a nice moving dog.

I really did like this dog.  It was a hard decision between this dog and the reserve dog.  He has a smooth, ground covering gait that could not be denied.  I was pleased to find out that this win finished him.

6-9 Puppy Bitches-#6 STARLANE’S OXFORD VICTIM OF LOVE
This puppy has a pretty head and a nice body for one so young.  She is balanced front and rear with good angles.  She moved flawlessly around the ring.

9-12 Puppy Bitches-#14 TIVIO’S LA DOLCE VITA DEL ORO
This is a fawn, brindle, and white bitch moves nicely, balanced and well put together.  She has a good topline and good depth of chest.

This is a white and brindle bitch.  She is very elegant with a flowing topline and good underline.

This is a fawn brindle and white bitch. She has a pretty head and eye, good topline and balanced front and rear.  She moves nicely around the ring.

This is a red and white bitch that has a very pretty outline, good head and eye.

Open Bitiches-#46 SUMMIT WILD OATS WINNER TAKES IT ALL
This is a mostly white bitch with a little more length of body than some of the others.
She has good reach and drive and covers the ground well.

This puppy is wonderful.  She oozes type and style.  She shows like she has doing it all her life, all six months of it.  She never let down to the very end of the day.

This brindle and white veteran is very smooth and balanced.  He moved as well or better than most of the younger boys.

The veteran is a beautiful red brindle and white.  She is very smooth over the topline and balanced front and rear.  It is so nice to see such nice veterans.

Lure Coursing/Straight Racing Dog-#53 NOUVEAU’S HOODOO MOJO
This is a nice black and white dog that looks to be built for speed.  He is expertly presented by his handler.

Best of Breed-#56 Ch. OXFORD ROWINGDALES BEAUTIFUL EYES
This fawn and white bitch is very curvy and balanced.  Everything flows together to produce a moderate size Whippet.  On this day she moved slightly better than the BOS dog.  This placement could change on any given day.

On Saturday, the offending equipment was batteries. Despite having plenty of them on hand, they were either not charged properly or not holding a charge properly, and we found ourselves scrambling to keep batteries on the charger and powered up enough to keep the lure ahead of the dogs. Thanks to our trusty equipment crew and their McGyver-like skills, we managed to make it through the day though it was a long day and the trial didn’t end until much later than usual. But Rob Nichols kindly stopped on the way to the field on Saturday night to buy two brand new powerful batteries to prevent a repeat performance on Sunday.

Sunday was off to a fine start, but then halfway through prelims we began experiencing trouble with the solenoids. First the solenoid on the main machine (with a newly rebuilt motor) burned out, but was quickly replaced with the solenoid from the backup machine. Unfortunately the backup solenoid also burned out, and the trial came to a screeching halt. Luckily the weather was spectacular and nobody seemed to mind the delay, but instead enjoyed soaking up the sunshine and good company while the McGyver crew gave it their all. It was decided to make a run to the nearest auto parts store for replacement solenoids, and since we were close enough to lunchtime, we broke early for our usual spectacular potluck fare. After lunch, with equipment issues sorted out, we powered through the remainder of the prelim runs, and ran straight through finals. Despite the delay, we were still done with awards and packing up by around 3:30!

But the weekend wasn’t all about the equipment – after all, it is really all about the hounds! And we had some fine running on display all weekend long. Despite the smaller than average entry in whippets, there were healthy entries in some of the other breeds, brought out, no doubt in part, to help support the assignment of provisional judge Avery McLeod. Thanks to these generous owners, Avery was able to complete preliminary requirements for two breeds at our trials! In total, Avery and our two regular judges Valorie Hill and Tom Robinson, both from BC, put pen to judges sheet to score the performance of 55 hounds on Saturday and 39 hounds on Sunday. It was nice to see former club member Albin Gersich come out and run the lure for us on Saturday to give the Swepstons the opportunity to run their own dogs.

Saturday’s whippet BOB went to Dapper, owned by WWWA member and hard-working field chairman Kendra Tripp.  Sunday’s BOB went to Katana, owned by Susan Shusterman. Notably, Best in Field each day was won by a different very talented-running Basenji! These two little dogs both put in spectacular runs, really wowing the judges and spectators in stiff competition.

We had our usual pot-overfloweth lunches both days, with lots of competition to choose from to select our Best in Potluck awards. Saturday’s prize went to Stephanie McLeod’s incredible Senegalese Peanut Soup, and Sunday’s prize went to Kerie Swepston’s Taco Casserole. Good eats!

Thanks to so many – club members and non-club members alike – who pitched in wherever needed. We couldn’t do it without you. Congrats to all the winners!

Thanks to all who entered, participated, helped, practiced, etc. – it was a good day of racing.

Even more dogs turned out on Sunday for even more not-quite-Spring-yet rain – and more running. Sunday we had a total of 64 dogs entered including Whippets, Ibizan Hounds, Italian Greyhounds, Pharaoh Hounds, and Silken Windhounds (plus a few practices). The day was a much wetter day, which the dogs didn’t mind, but the people were sliding around in the mud, and a few of us were soaked to the bone through our rain gear.

In usual oval racing style, there were some really great races today. The ovals are always exciting to see how the dogs jockey as they round the corners and pour on their final bit of full-speed on the straight to the finish. Sometimes it comes off like choreography, and sometimes it’s a squeeze with someone spitting out the back or front of the pack. At any rate – again, some exciting finishes.

There were bunch of really good running dogs, and I don’t want to take anything away from the rest of the dogs, but you have to take a close look at the story of the meet winning dog, Zephyr. First of all, this dog won the NAWRA meet on Saturday. Then he debuted as an FTE on the ovals today. Look where he started – in race 7. Worked his way up to the high point in program 3, where he went on to finish ahead of the A1 ranked Danny Boy (which is another treat/honor to have the A1 dog live here in the NW – which actually happens fairly often just because this area has some pretty hot race dogs) for the final 2 programs, just squeaking it out at the finish. I think there were some tears shed at the finish line, both of congratulations and of excitement.

And if you were paying attention to the Saturday results, you will notice that Zephyr’s owner took home the Best Opposite in potluck prize – with a repeat performance in that category on Sunday as well:

We had a last minute judge change, when one of our published judges called in sick the day before the trial, but luckily we were able to find a substitute judge on short order. Provisional judge Avery McLeod drove home a day early from California, where he was attending the Italian Greyhound national, and was able to judge for us on Sunday. Thank you Avery for saving the day and we were glad the assignment was allowed to count towards his provisional requirements.

We had healthy entries in Whippets, with a full stake in open on Saturday, and Silken Windhounds both days. In fact on Sunday, with a full stake, the Silken entry was the biggest in the trial. We had a smattering of entries in the other breeds, for a total trial entry of 39 on Saturday and 35 on Sunday.

Thanks to so many – club members and non-club members alike – who pitched in wherever needed. We couldn’t do it without you. Congrats to all the winners!

The weather threatened to be quite wet on Sunday, but held off for most of the day. We even had quite a bit of blue sky and brightness. We were able to get 3 programs and a lunch break in before the rain hit, and we had the whole crowd out of there before it really started to unload (while we were packing up of course). But again, a very nice time, good bunch of people, help from a few other breed people (including people foul judging – thank you!). As usual, some really exciting races on the oval. There are many congratulations to go around for some good races run, and the progress that several puppies are making. Thanks to everyone that attended!

AND…I just want to say thanks to the great bunch of people that are running these meets. It really has been going smoothly. And really, none of us could do it like this without the others – including the kids. And it’s been fun. I know it is no small task for any of us. So thank you to all of you.

11/9/2009 NOTRA meet winner, Kelp

A much more tolerable day than the day before – we actually had dry weather for a good portion of the day.  I think it was just trying to hint at us to give it up for the winter and put away the gear until next spring. A very smooth running day saw us finished by 1:30.

There were some very exciting races today – what you can’t see in the race by race results is all of the jockeying that goes on before they finish like that. Congratulations to all those receiving points today; Kelp, Marco and Dazzler. You could see these dogs really pushing to win today. Also notable was Willow – the highest scoring of 7 vets entered today – placing in the top 10, she had a bit of spark going on today.

Thanks to all who attended. We had a great day and appreciate all of your help and camaraderie.
