We had gorgeous weather Saturday which always puts a nice spin on the day. Good company, good potluck. People were learning to foul judge, lots of puppies practiced. It was a great day. The meet was over by 2:30, and the girls (Heather, Hannah, Jade and I) had the oval set up by 4:30. Only to be ready for a huge storm in the middle of the night.

The weather threatened to be quite wet on Sunday, but held off for most of the day. We even had quite a bit of blue sky and brightness. We were able to get 3 programs and a lunch break in before the rain hit, and we had the whole crowd out of there before it really started to unload (while we were packing up of course). But again, a very nice time, good bunch of people, help from a few other breed people (including people foul judging – thank you!). As usual, some really exciting races on the oval. There are many congratulations to go around for some good races run, and the progress that several puppies are making. Thanks to everyone that attended!

AND…I just want to say thanks to the great bunch of people that are running these meets. It really has been going smoothly. And really, none of us could do it like this without the others – including the kids. And it’s been fun. I know it is no small task for any of us. So thank you to all of you.

A much more tolerable day than the day before – we actually had dry weather for a good portion of the day. I think it was just trying to hint at us to give it up for the winter and put away the gear until next spring. A very smooth running day saw us finished by 1:30.

There were some very exciting races today – what you can’t see in the race by race results is all of the jockeying that goes on before they finish like that. Congratulations to all those receiving points today; Kelp, Marco and Dazzler. You could see these dogs really pushing to win today. Also notable was Willow – the highest scoring of 7 vets entered today – placing in the top 10, she had a bit of spark going on today.

Thanks to all who attended. We had a great day and appreciate all of your help and camaraderie.

Judge – Geir Flyckt-Pedersen, Hubbestad Whippets

Firstly: Thank you for this invitation and for showing some lovely dogs under me.

As some of you might know, I have been surrounded by Whippets for the last 25 years- in England, Sweden as well as in the US! And although I am originally a devoted terrier and spaniel breeder, Greyhounds have for many years been an important part of our lives. Currently the household is ruled by Whippets only- and you cannot find a more delightful breed to live with!

It is also one of my favorite breeds to judge. The variety in type and sizes can make for many difficult decisions.

Having judged the breed in several countries by the UK/FCI standard it might be a different story judging by the AKC standard. As many of you will know, the US standard gives max height for dogs as 22″ (2o” in the UK) bitches 21″ (18.5″ UK), which can easily create a totally different animal. But in my opinion they must still
be Whippets and not end up looking like small Greyhounds which some of the larger dogs may easily do!

Best Opposite Sex: CH Strebor's Life of the Party

I was initially not asked to do a critique from the show, which means I did not take any notes. So not to risk “offending” anybody underservedly, I will make a few general comments on my overall impressions plus comment on my winners – that I still have clear pictures of in my head.

Some of my main concerns at this show were eyes and expressions. The UK standard says nothing about eye size, but the standard here asks for a large eye! The number of small, beady eyes were surprising – and to me a correct expression is such a vital ingredience for the entire picture.

Also ear size. Definitely a problem in this country. The standard calls for “small, fine in texture” – but so many have large, thick ears. And in my opinion – a small, beady eye in combination with a large ear is not particularly attractive.

A few dogs also had rather heavy, thick bone- with a rather unrefined head. A Whippet should be elegant and refined, lack of bone is also undesirable, but too much can create a serious problem regarding breed-type!

A few dogs had also over-angulated hindquarters! Over-angulation – however attractive it makes the picture of a dog standing – is in my opinion a serious weakness.

I don’t think I have ever seen an over-angulated racing or coursing star in either Greyhounds or Whippets -
and I think that confirms my theory!

Winners Dog: Lost Creek Vendage

Regarding movement: There seems to be a trend to move the dogs round the ring at a speed appropriate for a GSD. Give the dogs a chance to put their feet on the ground at a pace where it is possible for a judge to stand back and enjoy the picture of a dog moving effortlessly round the ring and a chance to see that long, low reach in front which is so attractive in both Greyhounds and Whippets. The breed was never made to fly!!!

But – as I said at the start of these comments – I had the pleasure of judging many excellent dogs, shown in great form and well presented and handled. The average handler in this country is far superior to handlers in most other countries – and this definitely makes the job of judging the dogs so much easier.

My Best of Breed winner Ch. Starline’s Chanel was an old acquaintance, as I judged her last year in Del Valle and made her BOB even there.

She is of a type which would be appreciated anywhere in the world. She has class and quality written all over here. Her head and expression just delightful, her neck balances her body and her outline is lovely. She is a Whippet through and through, lovely bone, legs and feet. Moved soundly coming and going – went round the ring at a pace I think fits her and the breed! Shown in glorious form.

My Best of Opposite came from the Veteran class: Ch Strebor’s Life of the Party. Just over 7 years old, which is not old for a Whippet. Not really glamorous, but so typical and balanced throughout. All male, excellent
overall balance and proportions, he moved well and was shown in good condition. Well handled.

Winners Bitch and Best of Winners: Lost Creek A Taste of Red

My Best of Winners was the bitch Lost Creek A Taste of Red. I really liked this girl. Feminine head, good length of neck and excellent overall proportions. Well angulated both ends. Moved well and shown in good form.

My Winners Dog was: Lost Creek Vendange. I was told was the litter brother to above. Very similar in type. Lovely head, good length of neck – and his outline was excellent. Good body and bone and shown in good condition.

Must have been a very satisfactory litter!

My reserve WD was Cottonwoods Melts Like Butter of Chelsea. In many ways similar to the winner. Not a big one, but still masculine. In great form and moved well

My reserve WB from the 6-9 month class Endeavor’s White Rose of Nysa Hill. It is always risky to put up a puppy, but this one I would have taken with me home without hesitation!

I liked everything about her, just needs time, maturity and more experience! Will follow her progress with interest!

Award of Merit: CH Chelsea Chamisal

1 Award of Merit: Chelsea Chamisal. A really lovely bitch who certainly gave the BOB a run for her money. Full of quality and type. A lovely outline and a sound mover. Liked her lots.

2 Award of Merit: Ch Carry On Von Dutch. This brindle dog has a so much to like about him. Typical, balanced and he moved well. Would have like him to carry more weight. He comes from an excellent breeder, has an excellent sire – and it shows.

JUNIOR SHOWMANSHIP.

Only 5 participants, but they were all good!

The winner was a very accomplished young lady, Lindsey McKim, who did an excellent job .

Judge – Espen Engh, Jet’s Greyhounds (Norway)

I was delighted to be invited to judge the Western Washington Whippet Association’s Specialty. I have had the pleasure of judging four previous whippet specialties in the US. All have been very enjoyable experiences, and my 5th US whippet specialty was certainly no exception. Some of my most memorable judging appointments have been those whippet specialties, and walking down memory lane, my SBIS-winners from those previous four occasions were brought to mind. I count all of them among the greats of our breed; Ch.Bohem Delacreme Demoiselle, Ch. Chelsea Drakkar of Oxford, Ch.Red Cloud Quintessence and Ch.Brushwood Moxi of Endevour.

Being asked to write this critique quite a long time after the fact and having not made any notes at site, my comments will be mainly general.

Best Opposite Sex: CH Whimsy's New Way To Fly

I was very pleased with overall type; most dogs combined substance with elegance to a good degree, there were a number of well proportioned whippets and I had no problems finding winner with the all-important whippety body shape. Side movement was also generally pleasing, if rarely great. Movement coming and especially going away left something to be desired in many.

Quality – as in the difference between a Ferrari and a Volkswagen or between travelling business class or coach – was impressive. A whippet is only beautiful when they have that pure-bred, stallion like quality, the look of not having happened by coincidence, but being the result of a breeders careful plan.

I was worried about some traits; more than a few of the heads I found bordering on untypical; overly refined with not enough width of skull and with the eyes placed far too narrow, creating an impression of a one-eyed dog. This frequently went with overly long and refined muzzles as well. As a European I am not as hung up on heads as most Americans, so it is rather odd for me to focus on this to the degree I had to on the day. But when the heads are as way off as was the case with some whippets on the day, I found them unacceptable, untypical and unplaceable.

space

Winners Dog: Lost Creek Vendage

Another worry was front construction. A significant proportion of the dogs were way too straight in shoulders, upper arms and/or pasterns, and more often than not the same dog failed in all these aspects of the front as well as in lack of front fill. This is not only unsightly in a whippet, but very unfunctional for a galloping dog. Not a new problem in American whippets or whippets anywhere for that matter, but still one that breeders will still need to focus and improve on.

BOB Ch.Starline’s Chanel is a superbly feminine white and brindle bitch of a type that would be admired by whippet fanciers worldwide, and she is certainly not too big either. Her combination of substance with elegance is close to ideal, she is very well constructed and she has exactly the right curves in the right places and moved with great suppleness and coordination.

BOS Ch.Whimsy’s New Way To Fly is a classical quality white and fawn dog, very whippety and with a beautiful, deep and curvy body, another whippet who could win worldwide. He may not be the most enthusiastic showman, but dog shows are to me much more about the intrinsic quality of the dog, the cake is much more important than the icing.

WB and BOW Chelsea Chamisal is a stunning white and brindle bitch who pressed BOB all the way. She has ideal proportions and curves and a deep brisket, she is perfectly angulated both ends, moves like a dream, but lost out for BOB on two minor details.

Winners Bitch, Best of Winners: Chelsea Chamisal

WD Lost Creek Vendange is an elegant, very handsome white and red dog who came into his own on the move, very true and very precise. He is smooth and curvy, has a beautiful head and expression, a long and crested neck, but did not always want to stack to perfection.

Two Awards of Merit went to the beautiful veteran dog, Ch. Strebor Life of the Party and to Ch. Tivio’s Falling Into Place.

The friendliness and hospitality was outstanding, all in all a show I will remember for time to come. Thank you!

Yours
Espen Engh

Following a definite trend in 2009, once again, we were absolutely blessed by the weather gods for our fall ASFA trials. While Saturday was a little colder and cloudier than originally forecast, other than a brief shower in the morning, the weather stayed dry. Sunday dawned crisp and clear, with blue skies and frost, but the temperature warmed with the rising sun and we all enjoyed a very pleasant day at the Polo Field, the beauty of which was definitely enhanced by the fall colors of the trees ringing the field and Mt Rainier in all its majesty in the distance.

We faced the usual challenges with the Polo Field toilet, and when the flushing mechanism bit the dust on Saturday afternoon, we were sincerely concerned about our prospects for the rest of the weekend… but thankfully, Kerie “MacGyver” Swepston, managed to rig a working flusher out of a coat hanger and saved us all from a most unpleasant fate. Other notable action: the dramatic rescue of a panicked, starving feral cat that had been accidentally trapped in the clubhouse without food or water (or litterbox) for an unknown period of time. Fun times!

The trials were also noteworthy in that nearly half the healthy entry each day was from day-of entries – which was great for the club’s treasury but forced the field committee to look lively in order to handle the early morning rush! But the well-oiled performance committee machine came ready for anything, and got the job done. Thanks to everyone who volunteered in one way or another!

We were thrilled to get entries in some breeds not often seen at our trials lately, including Pharaohs, Irish Wolfhounds, Scottish Deerhounds and especially Borzoi. Sunday marked the special occasion of WWWA’s very first official stake of Cirnechi dell’Etna since that breed was admitted to full ASFA eligibility earlier this year. We were happy to hear that a number of hounds finished their titles over the weekend. Congratulations to all the fine running hounds and their owners who enjoyed the coursing!

Congratulations to Jenny Howe for veteran Dagen’s BOB on Saturday, and to Chadd and Misti Bowen and proud breeder Helen Brettell on Reggie’s BOB and BIF on Sunday!

Special congratulations go out to club member Laurel Behnke, formerly Wilks, who married her sweetie Don on the eve of the trial and still couldn’t stay away from the coursing field on her first full day of wedded bliss. Congratulations Laurel and Don!

For our second day of the race weekend, we had a repeat performance from the weather gods – absolutely beautiful. Again, a great group of people with a nice sized entry. Thanks to all who were there, pitched in and participated. It was another great day, with some really exciting races. There was no predicting who was going to win this meet. Check out the high point finishes from race to race! Congratulations to all! There was some nice stuff going on in the lower numbered races too – I know I wasn’t the only one having fun watching.

I’m sure everyone is wondering why the specialty results have not yet been posted on the website, so I thought I would at least post a quick update. I have been waiting to receive the judges’ critiques, and as soon as I get them I will post complete results and photos of the winners.

In the meantime, complete results are available from the BaRay website and EWhippetzine published pictorials for the entire specialty weekend: WWWA and WWHA.

Several individuals were shooting ringside candids, and photos may be viewed and/or purchased from the following:

Kirsten Hopperstad (Saturday only)

Beth Levine (all three days)

Stay tuned for more info coming soon! And (hint hint) of course club member brags are always welcome, so please email your brags (with photos) to Beth Levine!
