February 6 Practice update

We will be having a practice Saturday the 6th, beginning 11:00 at the front field (same as the last practice).  David and I will be there abit early for setup.  The next practice will be Saturday the 20th, same time.   We will decide on the field for the second practice closer to the 20th.

March is going to be a very hard month inwhich to have practices.  I will be out of town part of the first two weeks of the month.  There are meets the last two weekends.  If at all possible I will schedule a practice the last Sunday of February.  But, I will let everybody know closer onto the date.

As always, practice rain or shine unless a torrential downpour or flooding.  Please be sure to check your e-mails around 8:00 am day of.  If I have to cancel, I will post an e-mail by 8:00 to everybody.

Need directions?  Yell!

Show Committee Meeting Directions

The original post about the Show Committee meeting has been updated with directions to the meeting location.

Show Committee Meeting

A very necessary show committee meeting is planned for Sunday, Feb. 7th at 12:00 noon at Jan Leikam’s home, Echo Lake.  We need to discuss some very important changes in classes (AKC change) and the future of obedience.  Also need judges for 2011.

DIRECTIONS: Hwy 522 east toward Monroe.  Exit at Echo Lake Road.  South on Echo Lake Road until you pass Williams Pipeline compressor station on your right, take the next right onto 131st ST SE.  Go approximately 1 block and the main road will veer left.  Stay straight on 131st  to the second right.  That will be 238th ST SE.  Turn right, we’re the 2nd drive on the left. 12910 238th ST SE, Snohomish 98296, 360 668 0214

I would like some input from club members regarding our judges for Specialties in 2011, 2012, etc.  If everyone, with the interest and knowledge, could suggest judges for both our regular classes and our sweepstakes.  This list will be used to select judges for the next couple of years.  I’m assuming there will be duplicates and we’ll start with those.  Those judges who are provisional are encouraged as we get ‘credit’ for using provisionals and they are often cheaper :-)   We would also like to share our suggestions with the Hound Club to cut down expenses, offer more pricey judges to share or support our entry on Sunday for specialist judges.
Give it some thought and e-mail to me.  Like this discussion at the upcoming show committee meeting.

2009 Annual Awards

2009 Annual Awards Application

Click on the thumbnail to open the application in Word format.

The Western Washington Whippet Association offers an Annual Award for each of the following titles achieved during the year beginning January 1st and ending December 31st :

  • AKC Bench Champion / Foreign Bench Champion
  • AKC Field Champion / Foreign Field Title
  • AKC Obedience or Rally title / Foreign Obedience Title
  • Agility Titles
  • ASFA Field Champion or LCM  /  NOFCA Title
  • Racing Titles (CWA, NAWRA, WRA, NOTRA)

You may apply for as many awards as you qualify for, but you cannot win an award, if you do NOT apply.

Rules governing Annual Award Competition:

  1. To be eligible for an award, a member must be in good standing at the time the win is acquired.  The owner of the dog, the person who actually handles the dog to its titles, must be a club member.
  2. Persons joining the club during the year, will be credited with wins made only during actual membership.  For the Breeder Award, dogs must be bred by the member, they do not have to live with the member.  For the Sire/Dam awards the owner of the sire/dam must be a club member, but the dogs that accumulate the points do not have to be member owned.  Awards may not be claimed for dogs bred, except for the Breeder Award, by members that did not put the points on the dogs themselves (see Rule 1)
  3. Awards may be claimed for deceased dogs.
  4. All titles must be verified by presentation of a copy of the certificate or proof of title issued by the kennel club or appropriate organization.  This copy shall be attached to the application form.
  5. A separate form must be filed for each award, whether for the same or different dogs.
  6. The Awards committee assumes no responsibility for distribution of the awards other than the official presentation.  All club-sponsored awards not claimed after 6 months, will become the property of the club.  Individually sponsored awards will be returned to the donor if not claimed.
  7. Member-sponsored awards must be available for presentation at the Annual Awards dinner.

Member Sponsored Awards

Mary & Chris Downing (Whimsy Whippets) offer an award to the breeder of the whippets (at least 2) who acquire the most bench points, lure coursing points and obedience/rally points during the calendar year.  The dogs need not be owned by the breeder.  They must take points in at least two of the three areas of competition.  Points from AKC and CKC events to be compiled separately.  Obedience points to be determined by the average of the 3 highest scores.

Susan & Chris Manthou (Bzantium Hounds) will offer an award for the club member-owned dog shown by the owner that acquires the most Best of Breed wins during the calendar year.  At least half of the wins must be AKC wins.  Ties to be determined by the number of dogs defeated during the year.

Doris Ringer (Ringo Whippets) offers an award to the club member-owned puppy who acquires the most AKC points before reaching 1 year of age.  Ties to be determined first by major wins, then by the number defeated, then by age (younger over older).

Christine Hopperstad (Alcyon Whippets) offers two awards to the Sire and /or Dam whose get and progeny acquire the most cumulative total AKC show points during the calendar year.

Helen Brettell (Lost Creek) offers an award for the top winning conformation Veteran whippet.   This competition is open to all whippets 7 years and older.  Point score is based on the number of whippets defeated by the veteran dog or bitch.  Points must be gained by winning Veteran Dog or Veteran Bitch class, Best Veteran at a specialty, BOB or BOS.  Only those whippets actually present and defeated shall be counted.  Wins from licensed conformation shows in any country may be counted.  Whippet must be owned and reside with a club member.  If a whippet turns 7 during the course of the year, only those points gained after the birthday count toward this award.  In the unlikely case of a tie, winner will be the oldest whippet.

Jeannette Dorsey (Treadway Whippets) in Memory of Loughren Snow Spot CD FCh FCHX offers an award to the club member owned dog who acquires the most Best of Breeds in the coursing field during the calendar year.  Ties to be determined by the number of dogs defeated.

Arrow Perpetual Award Pat Younger offers a sterling silver trophy bowl to the highest scoring obedience whippet from the Regular classes of AKC, UKC, CKC and foreign shows.  The award is a perpetual one, and must be returned to WWWA Awards Committee preceding the Awards Banquet.

  • Score is to be calculated from the total of the three (3) best scores achieved during the award (calendar) year.  a. You cannot hook a leg from a previous year.  You may, however, combine classes, e.g. two Novice scores with one Open score, etc.  b. Ties will be broken by use of a fourth show’s score.  c. In case of an absolute tie, winner will be determined by the Awards Committee, which must confer with donor.  d. All scores used must be qualifying scores.
  • The three scores must be from either AKC or CKC shows and cannot be intermixed.  e.g., You cannot use two legs won in AKC with one won in Canada.  You can, however, submit the two scores won in the same country, or club.
  • A dog can win with less than three scores.  If a dog qualified only once or twice in the given calendar year, the scores will still apply to the awards.  You do not have to submit three scores; however, if another dog is presenting three scores, your total obviously will be less.  NOTE:  It is very difficult to achieve three legs in any given calendar year, so odds of winning the trophy with fewer legs are reasonable.  Obedience exhibitors should submit all scores.
  • Owner/handler must provide copies of AKC Gazette pages showing the score and show, etc., for verification.  Proof of scores is the responsibility of the owner/handler.
  • Dogs must be handled by a member of WWWA or their immediate family; the handler will keep the award.  The whippet need not be owned by the handler.  However, the trophy plates will be engraved in the dog’s name.
  • The trophy bowl’s designation plates will be engraved by the winner before its return to the Awards Committee.  In addition, the bowl will be returned to the Awards Committee polished, clean and ready to present to the next winner.

Annual Member Report deadline

Just a reminder that the January 31 deadline for your annual reports is fast approaching. Please refer to the original announcement for more information about this feature.

To date I’ve only received a few of these, and I’m thinking of discontinuing this feature in the future as there just doesn’t appear to be much interest in it.

January and February practice schedule

This year’s race meets and lure trials are coming up quickly!  Below, is our schedule for practices for January and February.  We will be bringing the two hole boxes with us.  The first practice will be held at the Frohning farm located on Tualco Loop Rd just south of Monroe.  Parking as usual behind the barn staying on the gravel only.

Since we will have only three or four practices before the first race meet, they will be held unless there is torrential rain and the field isn’t fit to run in.  If the practice has to be called off due to field conditions, I will have sent out an e-mail by 8:00 day of.

If anybody has questions or needs directions, drop me an e-mail.   March schedule will be out in another week or two.

January 24, Sunday, 11:00
February 6, Saturday, 11:00
February 20, Saturday, 11:00

Cost is the same as last year – $5.00 for the farmer and $2.00 per dog regardless how many runs.  All dogs get at least two runs, time permitting, more than two is usually possible.

Set up and tear down help is graciously accepted.  Anybody who would like to learn to run the lure or help with the lure operation, I’m pretty sure that David would be in seventh heaven! <g>

- submitted by Shirley Konizeski (email for directions or more information)

Practice is on for Thursday at 3:00.  It will be at the field behind the barn next to the Fish and Wildlife area.  But, please don’t park at the Fish and Wildlife parking area as it is by permit only.  Directions as follows:
Either north from Duvall or south from Monroe, take the 203rd St. SE exit (goes west).  You will be driving thru the reformatory farms.  At the stop sign, turn right on Tualco Rd.  Turn left on Tualco Loop Rd.  The Frohning farm is the first house on the left.  Take the gravel road just past the house (left turn) and turn in behind the barn.  Please do not drive or park on the grass.  If you are coming from the north on Tualco Loop Rd. look for the tractor show sign in the yard and turn right on the gravel road.  Proceed to the barn.  Remember, there are no porta potties available.
We will not be bringing boxes as this is a lure coursing focus practice.
A reminder for those of you who are interested in and are ready for full up racing or need the use of the big boxes - there will be oval practice with the full up boxes at the Sowards (Goldendale) on the 4th and a race meet on the 5th.   Jo has also said that she can accomodate straight practices with the big boxes too.

2009 Annual Reports

As we’ve done for the last few years, I’d like to invite all members to submit an annual “member report.” Please email me a summary of any notable achievements and accomplishments you’ve had with your whippets over the past year. Feel free to include photographs.

This shouldn’t be a fancy formatted ad, but more of an informal report on your activities. Some members have shared their success over the course of the year in the brags section, but I’m hoping to hear from some of the quieter members too. It doesn’t have to be big show or performance wins, either. If you got a new puppy, or lost an old friend, take the opportunity to let your fellow whippet lovers know what was going on for you in 2009.

There is no charge to participate in the annual member report. Please send all submissions by January 31 , 2010. I hope to hear from everyone!
