Whippet Rescue

JOEY - I don't know where Joey's story begins, only where I come in. My local shelter called me saying they had just gotten in a whippet. I am on very good terms with my local shelter, and have volunteered there often. They held Joey for me till I got there a couple hours later. All they could tell me is that the woman who dropped him off was getting divorced, had already placed the younger whippet she had but, had tried and tried to place Joey and no one wanted him because he was 12 years old. The owner was crying so badly, they could get no more information. I wish I could tell her that Joey is in a good place now and ease her pain a bit. At when we got him home, he was as sweet as he could be, hungry as heck and skinny, almost emaciated. Poor guy! He fit right in, getting along great with the other dogs, being housetrained and good with little kids even. The first day or two we spent talking about how awful his owner was to give him up, and how we would live in our cars before we ever gave up our dogs. Then we started to wonder if the divorce was for some bad reason, like was she being abused, finally got out, lived in her car, couldn't afford to feed the dogs, started to see them getting skinnier and skinnier and finally decided the pound was better than starving with her? Or was she just schmuck who didn't care. We will never know, but spending time with Joey, I tend to think he had a lovely home for most of his life. He certainly acts like he is used to being spoiled!!!! Nothing new to him to eat people food, sleep in bed, ride in cars and hang out on the sofa!!! Joey has had a complete geriatric work up, and ALL is good with him; liver, kidneys, heart, urinary systems, parasite free. He is microchipped and is hopefully leaving soon for his new home in Montana where he will get to go to work every day with his new owner. She is really looking forward to a buddy to walk with and is grateful to get Joey.

JOEY UPDATE: 6/21/06 - Joey is doing well. He's such a sweet, goofy guy. Very comfortable driving, loves hanging out at work and visiting with all the 'guys', and is FINALLY eating fairly well for me.
The construction guys get a real kick out of him and he's so social. He is now the official mascot of Big Sky Woodwork & Design Inc office, which is pretty funny since he's not your typical tough, rough construction type dog. He's got a nice bed by my desk where he hangs out when he's not socializing or begging.
He's settled in and comfortable at my cabin, and actually even did some 'sprinting' the last few days. He's eating ok; still picky but we're getting there. I have a heck of a time getting him to drink water ... did you ever have that problem? He's a grazer and actually seems to enjoy eating grass, not for a stomach ache, just for the sheer thrill of eating grass.
Thanks for everything,
Melanie

In March Shirley Konizeski picked up an fawn brindle and white male from the shelter in Bellingham. He had been wandering for a week with a Rott and some folks picked them up and turned them into the shelter, where they sat for the waiting period of one week. "Kiddo" is approximately 8 years old, sweet, gets along with other dogs and cats. I have several homes waiting and will probably have him placed by the time you are reading this.
As you may remember, we had a dog named Sprite in rescue in Nov who has been adopted out. Here is an update from his new family;
"Hi Laurel,
Just a quick update on "Sprite." He's doing great and putting on weight. He looks beautiful and is such a love. All our dogs are getting along just fine and our cockapoo is absolutely devoted to him.
I wanted to thank you for letting us adopt him. I can't believe how much my husband likes him. I don't think he's ever been around a whippet before -- neither have a lot of folks we've introduced him too. He's a VERY good ambassador for his sweet breed.
Hope you had a great Christmas and that 2006 is a wonderful year for you and your family.
Thanks again,
Cindy and George""
Hugo was adopted out through SPDR to a wonderful family in Oregon. This is the 2nd email they’ve sent me asking for another!!
""Hi Laurel,
Hugo is doing very well. I am at work right now but when I get home I will send you some cute pictures I have recently taken...He is such a food hound! I feed him separately but lookout if any other dog comes near his bowl! He is pretty vocal about it!!! He is so sweet & we love him so much. He lays in my bed with me...he puts his head on my husband's pillow...you should see him!
Can I be on your waiting list? I am not picky just cat & kid safe. I don't care about age, color, sex etc. Do you think Hugo would like having a new friend? I think he would.....
Hope you had a Merry Christmas & a Happy New year!
Kristie""
And of course, last but not least, Maggie! Most of us who attended the last meeting got to see the little cutie in person. She is living with a young couple with two, gentle, charming children. They are so enamored with Maggie; they are getting another whippet from Debbie Adams this spring for a friend for her!!
Maggie Update- 08/09/06
She is amazingly smart and clever and as you may have heard we got Roger at the end of January. At first it was a bit hard because Maggie was very jealous but, they made friends once Maggie realized how much more fun it was to have another whippet to play.
They now seem to have a pre-teen sibling type relationship, they love to be together but occasionally have their squabbles. We all honestly just love Maggie (and Roger) and they are 100% family :). They both have bonded incredibly with the kids and sleep with our son every night. Another thing about them which surprised me was how protective they are over the kids, when the kids are outside they shadow them and if one of the gets hurt or cries the dogs come rushing in to investigate and if all is well they lick them. It's very sweet!
Thank you for Maggie she's is absolutely wonderful and impresses everyone who meets her! I've attached some photos from about a month ago.you can see how big she's gotten, she's about 1-2" shorter then Roger.
Thanks
Daniele
