McKaden 2010

It’s been a pretty crazy year! But despite a couple of moves and a marriage to a local “whippetty” guy, we managed to squeeze a few whippet weekends in over the course of 2010…. We started 2010 off in Portland where Kiefer (Summit Ironwood Other Sutherland) was WD/BOW from bred-by for his first major from the puppy classes.

Next, on our way to the AWC National, Kingston (Can Ch Summit Ironwood Kingston) was BOS in Sweepstakes at the Southern California Hound Specialty Show.

At the National itself, brothers from our co-bred Jasper x Dazzle litter continued to turn heads in the ring. Kingston took a 3rd in Futurity and a 4th in the classes, Blaine (Summit Ironwood Blaine) was 2nd in his Futurity class, and both Blaine and Tigg (Summit Ironwood Everett) made the cut in the classes.

Undoubtedly, one of the most notable moments of the year dog-wise was having our boy Caden (Can Ch Summit Ironwood Decadence) follow up his 2008 win by going Winners Dog at the Western Washington Whippet Specialty for the second time. To know Caden is to adore him, we are SO proud of this special boy!

In the fall, we had exciting news from her owners that Farrah (Summit Ironwood Farrahst Of Them All) followed up several Best of Breed wins from the classes by winning a Group 4th placement in Oregon at only 17 months old. She has proven to be an eager lure courser as well, as she now can add an SC to her name. Farrah’s sister Sage (Summit Ironwood Fashion Statement) also completed her SC title and made us very proud by going BOB/BIF at an ASFA lure trial in California.

We also had a few additions to the McKaden Whippet family!

Ellie (Camelot Elegant Lady of Summit, co-owned by Camelot, Summit & Ironwood) is now residing with us. She has a futurity placement to her name and a BIG future ahead of her!

With marriage came a couple of “step-kids”; the now resident sofa accessory named Cro (QuiXand Kentfield Crotalus RCH) and wild-man puppy Tein (Quixand Tein'-Athair). It looks like we’ll be learning a bit more about the racing world in 2011!

Last but not least is “Mckaden” Cohen Dean Gillespie born September 27th! For those of you that know me from ringside, you’ll notice that our indispensable and ever faithful assistant/photographer Stephanie (owner of Sonny - SBIS AmCan Ch Summit And The Beat Goes On) has been on maternity leave after WWWA. Welcome to the world of whippets Cohen! I’m sure it’ll be only a few more years and you’ll be in the Juniors ring ?

Well, it looks like 2011 is gearing up to be just as fast-paced as last… we have several lovely dogs hitting the ring in earnest for the first time this summer (watch for Preston – Summit Ironwood Fawn Connery), and several others on the verge of earning their Championship titles. Not to mention several who are ready to hit the field!

Can’t wait to see everyone out there… a very happy new year to club members & hounds alike!

Shawna (Harrell) McKay
